Abstract

"The purpose of the volume which Dr. Arlitt here presents is to help parents who know little of psychological theory to understand what children' are like and how they grow. In the chapter on "How Your Child Thinks" there is an especially clear and simple explanation of the scientific facts in regard to the way a child's mind develops. In the other chapters the author has provided brief explanations and a generous number of illustrations and suggestions in order to help parents to understand the reasons for child behavior and to make clear their application in life situations which are familiar to every parent. The book does not intend to make fathers and mothers overconscious of their task nor to suggest that parenthood is overwhelming. Dr. Arlitt assumes that parents take pleasure in their children and that by means of a greater understanding of them, and a greater confidence in living with them, they will enjoy them even more. To the parent educator this volume offers an opportunity to consider the value of a more ample use of actual episodes in the lives of children as teaching material than is usually included in the literature of the pre-school period"--Introduction. Abstract

"This book is designed mainly for parents, teachers, and social workers who are immediately responsible for the care and training of children. It deals wholly with every-day problems concerning the promotion of the physical, intellectual, social, and ethical development and welfare of childhood and youth. Parents and teachers have proposed most of the topics which are discussed herein. In all the discussion it has been the aim to apply the results of recent investigation in child study, child psychology, child hygiene, education, and juvenile delinquency to the problems which those who train the young in the home, in the school, or elsewhere have to solve every day, and to present interpretations and recommendations in such a concrete way and in such simple, non-technical terms that readers who have made no study of psychology, physiology or related sciences can understand what is said and make practical application of it to their special needs. This will account for the short chapters and the informal style in which the material is presented. It will account, too, for the absence of mere theoretical discussion of child nature or child training. Correspondents have made it clear to the author from time to time that they desired him to go straight to the mark in suggesting a solution of their problems, and to avoid philosophic or technical discussion"--

Hints on child-training

Abstract

"Hints on Child-Training may be helpful, where a formal treatise on the subject would prove bewildering. It is easier to see how one phase or another of children's needs is to be met, than it is to define the relation of that phase of the case to all other phases, or to a system that includes them all. Therefore it is that this series of Hints is ventured by me for the benefit of young parents, although I would not dare attempt a systematic treatise on the entire subject here touched upon. Whatever theory of child-training may show itself in these Hints, has been arrived at by induction in the process of my experiences with children since I had to deal with the matter practically, apart from any preconceived view of the principles involved. Every suggestion in these Hints is an outcome of experiment and observation in my life as a father and a grandfather, while it has been carefully considered in the light of the best lessons of practical educators on every side. These Hints were begun for the purpose of giving help to a friend. They were continued because of the evident popular interest in them. They are sent out in this completed form in the hope that they will prove of service to parents who are feeling the need of something more practical in the realm of child-training than untested theories"--Preface. Abstract

These volumes are altogether different from other works on the training of children. They are not a collection of general observations on child life, but an earnest attempt to show parents just how to develop certain desirable characteristics in their children. They are intended for both parents. The mother in particular will make use of the earlier lessons on obedience, but both father and mother are urged to set up a new regime in child management under the specific instructions here offered. The Course of Study is comprised in four volumes, of which the present volume is the first. We have named the lessons on Obedience "Easy Lessons," believing that even this subject most difficult to teach to little children has been made really "easy," not only for the parent but also for the child. The introductory chapter explains five of the most important principles upon which the system is based. Next follow detailed lessons in teaching obedience from infancy to mature life. It is intended that parents shall actually teach these lessons to their own children. The methods of so doing are fully explained, and carefully selected type lessons are illustrated by photographic reproductions. Finally, in the light of the experience gained in the practical trying out of the lessons in their own homes, parents are asked in the final chapter of the book again to review some of the underlying principles in a more general and comprehensive way. Abstract

"Is there anyone who is responsible for the care and culture of a child who is not casting about everywhere for counsel respecting ways and means of improving the child's personality? Listen to parents or teachers who are discussing their everyday problems; it will soon become apparent that they are worried principally about the personal traits of their charges. The training of the intellect is secondary to the training of personality. One rarely attends a meeting of parents and teachers without hearing a discussion of methods of weeding out undesirable traits from a child's personality and establishing attractive characteristics therein. Any contribution to this subject is certain to be timely and to be heartily welcomed by all who are engaged in the education of the young, either in the home or in the school or in the community. It may be predicted, therefore, that this volume by Professor Myers will be eagerly read by parents, teachers, guardians, and social workers. The reader will probably have his conception of personality broadened as he progresses through this volume. The author regards personality as considerably more fundamental and comprehensive than do most teachers, parents and laymen. Professor Myers includes in the child's personality every trait except strictly intellectual processes ; all of one's attitudes towards one's fellows, all of one's feeling about himself, all of one's reactions to the situations in which he is placed, what one says and does, the way he looks, his posture, his unconscious mannerisms--all these are elements in one's personality and all must be considered in the treatment of measures for the improvement of personality. Practically everything that affects a child has an influence for good or for ill upon his personality. Always he is responding overtly or internally to what is said and what is done in his presence, even though it is not intended specifically for him. Always he is getting his cue from the tones of voice, the appearance, the assertions and the bearing of the people about him--his companions, visitors to his home, older brothers and sisters, and principally his parents, teachers and guardians. According to Dr. Myers, the child or the youth is never neutral in any social situation; he is always influenced in one way or another by his social environment. For this reason the words and the deeds of all who train the young, or who are even bystanders while the training is in progress, are of importance in shaping the child's personality"--
